Way of San Jacopo
2 min read
The Way of Saint James in Tuscany – known locally as the Cammino di San Jacopo – is a lesser-known but deeply meaningful pilgrimage route that crosses the heart of Tuscany. From Florence to Livorno, this trail connects historic cities such as Prato, Pistoia, Pescia, Lucca, and Pisa, offering a unique blend of spirituality, culture, and landscape.
Stretching across 170 kilometers, the path weaves through olive groves, Roman roads, and peaceful countryside trails. Along the way, pilgrims encounter ancient churches, quiet towns, and wide open spaces that invite pause and reflection. Pistoia holds special significance: home to one of the oldest relics of Saint James, the city has long been a key destination for medieval and modern pilgrims alike.
Villa Agnolaccio: A Restful Stop Along the Way
Tucked between rows of cypress trees and olive groves, Villa Agnolaccio sits directly along the route of the Cammino di San Jacopo, on the charming "Via Acciaio e Agnolaccio", which winds through the picturesque Floro-Faunistic Reserve of Groppoli — just 3 km from the center of Pistoia.
Lovingly restored by Ettore and his wife, this mid-1700s villa has been transformed into a peaceful bed & breakfast, combining tasteful furnishings with respect for the original architecture. Surrounded by hills, gardens, and the quiet rhythms of nature, it’s a perfect place to unwind after a day of walking.
👉 Villa Agnolaccio also offers a special discounted rate for pilgrims, in the spirit of slow travel and authentic hospitality.
A History Passed Down Through Generations
According to a school essay written by a child in 1920, the origins of the name Agnolaccio remain unclear. However, it recounts that a local family from Pistoia, the Galli family, once restored and enlarged the villa. One member of the family — a wealthy priest — is said to have commissioned the construction of a small chapel dedicated to Saint Joseph, completed in 1856, where he regularly celebrated mass for the people of the area.
Today, some of the original features of the villa are still intact, including the beautiful main door, a silent witness to centuries of stories.
